Artillery Objects: A broad scope of artillery objects, including a well-rounded collection of projectiles and aiming/firing tools and equipment. Union Occupation of Alexandria: Objects related to the Union occupation of Alexandria. These include a rare proclamation, dated May 26, 1861, declaring martial law in the city, and a number of items pertaining to the death of Union hero Col. Elmer Ellsworth at the Marshall House Hotel during the Federal occupation of Alexandria. Of special interest is a section of the Confederate flag that Ellsworth removed from the roof of the Marshall House prior to being killed by innkeeper James Jackson, a secessionist resident of Alexandria. Defenses of Washington: Objects include a 1862 topographical map of the defense system by the engineer E. G. Arnold, and a large wartime pencil drawing of Fort Albany, located in nearby Arlington, Virginia, by the soldier-artist William Lydston. This panoramic scene features landmarks in the surrounding Virginia and D.C. area that were labeled by the artist. Dorothy C.S. Starr Research Library: Over 2,000 books, periodicals and archival materials on general Civil War history and the Defenses of Washington. The library contains the complete reference series, The Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. Other important resources include photographs, largely from the Library of Congress and the National Archives, of general war subjects and scenes from the Defenses of Washington. Of special note is a collection of research material which was donated by the authors of several books on the historic defense system. The library has few regimental histories and does not contain military service records. The Sackler Gallery is host to contemporary art from Asia as well as international loan exhibitions. Together, both galleries form the national museums of Asian art at the Smithsonian Institution, and are dedicated to the acquisition, care, study, and exhibition of works in their collections. The Smithsonian Institution has two museums of Asian art: the Freer Gallery of Art, which opened to the public in 1923, and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, which welcomed its first visitors in 1987. Both are physically connected by an underground passageway and ideologically linked through the study, exhibition, and sheer love of Asian art. In addition, the Freer Gallery contains an important collection of nineteenth century American art punctuated by James McNeill Whistler's Peacock Room, perhaps one of the earliest (and certainly one of the most controversial) art installations on record. Each building has its own aesthetic. The Freer is designed in a classical style whose architectural nexus is a courtyard that used to house live peacocks in the museum's early days. It was Charles Lang Freer's goal to facilitate the appreciation of world cultures through art, a noble undertaking as important today as it was more than a century ago, when he first willed his artwork and archives to the nation. The Sackler takes you on an underground journey and is home to Dr. Arthur Sackler's incomparable collection of art, including some of the most important ancient Chinese jades and bronzes in the world. In addition, the Sackler Gallery contains works that have been acquired in the last twenty years and also features the Perspectives series of contemporary art that greets and often surprises visitors when they first enter the Gallery. It also has an excellent collection of resources for the study of Chinese painting, calligraphy, ceramics, jade, Buddhist sculpture, and ancient bronzes. Its strengths in the area of ancient Near Eastern art are Sassanian metalwork, ceramics, and cylinder seals. The library also has an exceptional collection of material on Indian miniature painting and sculpture as well as on Islamic metalwork, ceramics, glass, and the arts of the book. <a href="http://www.asia.si.edu/research/archives.asp"> Archives:</a> The Archives houses more than 140 collections—amounting to over one thousand linear feet of materials—dating from the early nineteenth century to the present. Rich and diverse materials include the personal and professional papers of preeminent art historians, archaeologists, artists, dealers, and collectors, plus major collections of nineteenth- and twentieth-century photography of Asia and the Middle East. The collections also include still and moving pictures, graphics, audio tapes, and other forms of documentation.
