The General Store Museum furnishings are based on authenticated period inventories. The arboretum surrounding the John Poole House is a collection of trees, bushes, herbs, and perennials indigenous to western Montgomery County before 1850. The Darby family provided two acres of land as well as the stone and wood for the building. Others offered to plaster and paint, or to dress the stone. Families with more limited means cut and seasoned oak for the woodstove. Fiske Kimball’s 1928 book American Architecture describes it as “an example of the triumph of classical form in America”. Before he was 21, he was made partner of the family business. At 27 he was the retail manager for the china shop and the Wilkes Street Pottery, a profession he would continue for the next twenty years. In 1831 Hugh Charles undertook an aggressive advertising campaign to promote the shops and its ceramic wares.
