<text>In 1862, surveyor and civil engineer E.G. Arnold published a topographical map of the District of Columbia. Reproducing the original Peter L’Enfant 1792 map, Arnold also included the city of Alexandria, which had been ceded back to Virginia in 1846. All railroad lines and regional roads entering the city are shown. Arnold listed the populations of Washington, Georgetown, and Alexandria by decade from 1800-1860, breaking down the population by race into "white," "free colored," and "slave." To Union military authorities, the Arnold Map was important for three reasons: it showed the topography of the area, all the roads leading into the city, and the location of the then 5 1 forts protecting the city. However, Arnold published without the knowledge or consent of the government. The War Department seized most copies and the copper plate to prevent the vital military intelligence from reaching Confederate forces. In compensation, Arnold received $8,000 for his loss by the U.S. government.</text>

<text>Léon Samoilovitch Bakst was a Russian painter and scene and costume designer. He was a member of the Sergei Diaghilev circle and the Ballets Russes, for which he designed exotic, richly coloured sets and costumes, and huge pageant spectaculars for dancer and patron, Ida Rubinstein. Bakst came into the theatre on the wave of choreographer Michel Fokine’s revolution in Russian ballet. In Fokine’s ballets, the theme dictated the style of the choreography, music and design; the steps were imbued with meaning and emotion. As part of the creative team, Bakst produced designs suited to each particular ballet - Orientalism in Scheherazade and Cleopatra, Ancient Greece in Daphnis and Chloë and Narcisse, Biedermeier in Carnaval and Spectre de la Rose, and 18th century style in The Good-Humoured Ladies and The Sleeping Princess.</text>

<text>Ephraim Francis Baldwin was an American architect, best known for his work for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and for the Roman Catholic Church. In 1872, Baldwin was appointed the head architect for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Over the next 25 years he designed stations and other structures for the railroad, including many of its most famous buildings. Perhaps the best known are the passenger car shop in Baltimore that is now the central roundhouse at the B&O Railroad Museum, the passenger station (1875) at Point of Rocks, Maryland and the B&O Warehouse (1905) at Camden Yards in Baltimore. The Catholic Church was also a major part of his life and work. Baldwin took a special interest in ecclesiastical work, undoubtedly motivated by his own religious beliefs and dedication. His work on churches, seminaries, schools, and health care facilities spanned his entire career. He was awarded a gold medal, Bene Merenti, by Pope Leo XII for his work on the buildings at The Catholic University of America.</text>
