<text>A fine example of Georgian architecture popular in Maryland in the late 1700's, Montpelier Mansion sits on approximately 70 acres of beautiful parkland. Architectural and construction details, as well as historical research, suggest that the house was constructed between 1781 and 1785. The original owners of Monteplier Mansion, Major Thomas Snowden and his wife Anne, welcomed many distinguished guests into their home, including George Washington and Abigail Adams.</text>

<text>Montpelier’s mission states that it is a “…museum dedicated to preserving and interpreting the mansion and its grounds from 1783 to the 1960’s with special emphasis on the Snowden Family occupation (1783-1831).” Much of the archival collections focus on materials of interest to genealogists of not only the direct Montpelier branch of the Snowden family, but also the extended family such as the Warfields, Contees and Reese/Johnson Lines. Within these collections there is wealth of information about the family and their activities through documents such as correspondence, account books, scrapbooks, photographs, and land record materials. It also has architectural and ground drawings of Montpelier showing the architectural evolution of the structure itself as well as some of the changes regarding land development surrounding the mansion.</text>

<text>Miller was a fourth generation, Pennsylvania Quaker, who was actively involved in the emancipation of slaves and the welfare of free blacks. He likely apprenticed with clockmaker and silversmith Elisha Kirk, a cousin, in Warrington, Pennsylvania. By 1786, he partnered with Caleb Bentley and worked in Leesburg, Virginia and by 1788 he established his own silversmith business in Alexandria, Virginia which by all accounts was quite successful. He advertised clocks, watches and an assortment of other items. Miller was listed as a watchmaker (1796) and silversmith (1797) in the Alexandria Census. His reputation was outstanding and his clients included George Washington. He left the business in 1800 to pursue other business ventures. </text>
