The buildings are named for Englishman John Gadsby who operated them from 1796 to 1808. Mr. Gadsby's establishment was a center of political, business, and social life in early Alexandria. The tavern was the setting for dancing assemblies, theatrical and musical performances, and meetings of local organizations. George Washington enjoyed the hospitality provided by tavernkeepers and twice attended the annual Birthnight Ball held in his honor. Other prominent patrons included John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, and the Marquis de Lafayette.</text>

<text>In 1839, a group, calling themselves the Alexandria Lyceum, joined with the Alexandria Library Company to build a grand hall to provide a place for lectures, scientific experiments and quiet reading. Eventually, the building itself became known as The Lyceum. It has been a Civil War hospital, a private home, an office building and the nation's first Bicentennial Center. In 1985, The Lyceum became Alexandria's History Museum, providing exhibitions, school programs, lectures and concerts. The present-day Lyceum Company serves the museum as a membership and fund-raising organization. In 1992, The Lyceum achieved accreditation by the American Association of Museums, a distinction awarded to the nation's leading museums.</text>

<text>The museum boasts a remarkable collection of herbal botanicals, handblown glass, and medical equipment, much still in its original location.  It also has a spectacular collection of archival materials, including journals, letters and diaries, prescription and formula books, ledgers, orders and invoices. The names of famous customers appear in these documents, including Martha Washington, Nelly Custis and Robert E. Lee. The museum continues to evolve as new research is uncovered and the museum expands its understanding and interpretation of the medical and business history captured by this site.</text>
